10 years prison for repeat offender in Aurora burglary

A North Aurora man with a long criminal history was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a 2014 residential burglary in Aurora, Kane County prosecutors announced Monday.

A Kane County jury in February convicted Roosevelt T. Yankaway, 23, of the 100 block of East State Street, of one count of residential burglary, a felony.

Yankaway was accused of breaking into a house on the 1000 block of Kane Street in Aurora the afternoon of Dec. 29, 2014, and stealing $300, prosecutors said. A resident who lived on the upper floor heard noises and saw Yankaway headed up the stairs, but then he ran off.

Based on his criminal background that included felony convictions for burglary, residential burglary and criminal damage to property, Yankaway was eligible for extended sentencing. Judge Linda Abrahamson sentenced Yankaway to 10 years prison, but he can be out in about a little more than 3.5 years. Yankaway can have his sentence cut in half under Illinois law for good behavior, and he also gets credit for 436 days served at the Kane County jail while the case was pending.
